[COMMENT: 'Treason' - a definition worth getting under one's belt in a time of growing spiritual and political unrest. We must know our boundaries.
'Treason' is a word with lots of emotional baggage and needs to be nailed down for its reasonable meaning. The article below points to a fairly clear notion given for the legal realm. My dictionary gives the following:
"...violation of the allegiance owed to one's sovereign or state; betrayal of one's country, specif., in the U.S. (as declared in the Constitution), consisting only in levying war against the U.S. or in giving aid and comfort to its enemies."
On the other hand, there are wider meanings of the word as well -- especially in the Biblical cosmos where "one's sovereign" is God Himself.
And, in a democratic republic under God, the electorate is the highest official of state. Violation of the voters by the government is treason against their rulers, i.e., the people, and against God, the Ultimate Ruler, King of kings, and Lord of lords.
As the piece below explains, the Constitution defines political and legal treason. But there is moral and spiritual treason as well, and that is treason deeper than the the political sort. It strikes at the very foundations of the possibility of community, freedom, and justice. It subverts government of a free people, and always leads to some form of slavery. The author below thus needs to define more clearly what he means by the underlying meaning of 'treason', not merely the constitutionally defined meaning of the word.
The word is used to refer to breach of faith and trust in a more personal relationship meaning. I have often used the word this way in religious and political contexts, where there is a trust relationship of governance and leadership which is deliberately subverted for dishonest goals. Many in Episcopal Church leadership are committing treason against the people and against God by their knowing subversion of truth, and their knowing and deliberate subversion of honest, open discussion of (e.g.) sexuality issues.
The most basic level of this kind of betrayal is pointed to in Romans 1:18 ff. where Paul notes that subversion of truth is the first step in the Fall. The only possible common ground of communication, community, and communion is the common ground of truth-seeking. So any systematic subversion of truth-seeking on anyone's part begins that basic treason against life itself.
One does not usually use the word 'treason' unless that has been some prior and specific covenant or agreement about a matter -- a specific covenant or moral responsibility against which one can commit treason. And most people have not agreed to be truth-seekers and truth-speakers at any cost to themselves.
But the principle remains, that any systematic subversion of truth undercuts the possibility of honest relationship. So any offer of relationship springing out of that abuse must lead to some form of wrongful control and subversion of relationship. Therefore, I think, it is reasonable to apply 'treason' to persons who violate public trust in a systematic and fundamental way.
I would put in that category those Supreme Court justices and other politicians who have knowingly subverted our Constitutional order over the last 150 years. I would apply it also to educators who have subverted the passing on of truth (education) to control the people rather than to set them free.
This is a matter which requires more clarity on the Biblical nature of the American political order, what it stands for, and how we can preserve (or regain) it. Clarity always favors truth, unclarity always favors falsehood. Deliberate and systematic unclarity amounts to moral (if not legal) treason. And morality is the basic foundation of all legality.
