Lectionary & Hymns for St. Luke's REC
Back to St. Luke's Page (on the Road to Emmaus)... or to St. Luke's Website
This page is primarily for those in charge of organizing our readers and for publishing our Sunday bulletin. But whoever you might be -- WELCOME!
The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) for the Reformed Episcopal Church (REC) has a lectionary (list of "Palms and Lessons for the Church Year" for use at Morning and Evening Prayer) beginning on page xvi. Because the list for the Sunday "Collects, Epistles, and Gospels" (beginning on page 119) does not have Old Testament (OT) lessons or Psalms listed, we are taking the OT lessons and Psalms from the Morning and Evening Prayer "Psalms & Lessons for the Church Year". The list of Psalms & Lessons gives three or four choices for a given Sunday, so the list below will be (almost always) a selection from that list.
The list below will give the OT lesson and Psalm for the Sunday indicated (used with the Epistle and Gospel given for each Sunday - p. 119 ff.). The list below will be completed as we go through the Church Year, and then remain more or less fixed, as are the Epistles and Gospels. If there are changes in the OT lesson or Psalm, the clergy will notify those responsible for organizing the readers and producing the Sunday bulletin.
Calendar dates are not given because (with only a few exceptions) they change each year, only the names of the Sundays are given. Those in charge of reading and bulletins should have access to a yearly Church Calendar to coordinate the Church calendar with solar calendar dates. There is one posted inside one of the closet doors.
There are 6 Epiphany Sundays and 24 Trinity Sundays, not all of which are used in most church years. Epiphany Season ends at Quinquagessima Sunday, and Trinity Season ends at "The Sunday Next before Advent", so some of the Epiphany Sundays and Trinity Sundays leading up to the end may or may not be used, depending on the date of Easter, which changes every year (depending on the Passover). Because the date for Easter changes, both Epiphany and Trinity seasons change in length almost every year.
On occasion, when a Holy Day occurs during the week, that might be transferred to the Sunday before or after that date. The fixed date Holy Days which we use are listed at the end. The dated items below have fixed dates and might not be on a Sunday.
The Church Year begins with Advent 1 and ends on Christ the King Sunday, next before Advent.
